What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small metal screw that works like a natural tooth root. This permanent tooth replacement option is placed directly into the jawbone, where it supports one or more artificial teeth (the restoration) to complete your smile.
Dental implants are typically made of titanium, a material commonly used in dentistry because of its strength and compatibility with the body. Titanium is generally well tolerated and helps support stability as the implant gradually integrates with the surrounding bone.
When topped with a restoration such as a crown or denture, dental implants can be a natural-looking way to restore the look and function of your smile.
What Happens If Missing Teeth Are Not Replaced?
Gaps left by missing teeth reduce the stability of surrounding teeth, allowing them to shift out of position. This movement can negatively impact bite alignment, making chewing and speaking more difficult.
The bone around the area may also begin to deteriorate, resulting in loss of support for the adjacent teeth and could lead to further tooth loss.
The Dental Implant Process
At your initial consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth and supporting structures to determine whether implants are appropriate for you and whether a procedure such as bone grafting will be necessary prior to the implant process.
If you are a suitable candidate, your dentist will begin by surgically placing the implant into the jawbone beneath the gum tissue. As the area heals, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone to form a stable base for the restoration.
Once the implant area has healed, about three to six months after surgery, you will return to have your restoration added. Depending on the number of teeth being replaced, your restoration may be a crown, bridge or denture.
Dental Implant FAQs
Considering dental implants, but still have questions? Read through the answers to our most frequently asked questions about dental implants at North Shore Smile Dentistry to learn more.
-
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants are designed to be a long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth. With proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, the implant itself can often last many years and, in some cases, decades.
The dental crown, bridge, or denture attached to the implant may need replacement over time due to normal wear. Your dentist at North Shore Smile Dentistry can help you maintain your implant and monitor its condition during routine visits.
-
How do you care for dental implants?
Dental implants are cared for much like natural teeth. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and attending regular dental checkups and cleanings can help improve the longevity of the implant by maintaining the health of the surrounding gums and teeth.
Our North and West Vancouver dentists may also recommend specific cleaning tools or techniques to help care for your implant and maintain your oral health over time.
-
Is getting a dental implant painful?
Dental implant placement is typically performed using local anesthesia to help keep you comfortable during the procedure. Many patients report that the experience feels similar to having a routine dental procedure.
After implant surgery, it is normal to experience some mild discomfort or swelling for a few days as the area heals. Your dentist will provide aftercare instructions to help promote a comfortable recovery.
-
How long does the dental implant process take?
The dental implant process often takes three to six months from start to finish, but can take longer depending on individual health, whether additional procedures are required, overall oral hygiene and care.
After the implant is placed, a healing period is usually needed to allow the implant to integrate with the surrounding bone before the final restoration is attached.
Your dentist will outline the expected steps and timeline during your consultation.

Are dental implants covered by insurance?
Some dental insurance plans may cover portions of dental implant treatment, such as the crown or related procedures, but coverage varies by provider and policy. In some cases, the implants themselves may have limited or no coverage.
The team at North Shore Smile Dentistry can help review your insurance details and discuss available treatment and payment options during your visit.
